Two high school students, Yemi<\/strong> and Alexander<\/strong>, completed a five\u2011month research experience with the Data\u2011Driven Decision Making (D3M) Lab<\/strong> as part of the 2026 EnvironMentor Program<\/strong>. Guided by Dr. Sayed Mohsin Reza<\/strong> and undergraduate mentor Pranshav Lakhia<\/strong>, the students engaged in hands\u2011on, data\u2011driven research focused on real\u2011world challenges spanning environmental and sustainability domains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the culmination of the program, both students presented their research at the EnvironMentor Symposium<\/strong>, showcasing their work to faculty, mentors, and peers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yemi<\/strong> presented \u201cQuantitative Analysis of COVID\u201119\u2019s Effects on CO\u2082 Emissions in the United States,\u201d<\/em> exploring how pandemic-related disruptions influenced emission patterns through data analysis and visualization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexander<\/strong> presented \u201cAnalyzing Operational Resilience Across Airline Business Models During Adverse Weather Conditions,\u201d<\/em> examining how different airline models respond to disruptions using data-driven insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of the mentorship, the students developed foundational skills in data analysis, research methodology, visualization, and scientific communication<\/strong>, while gaining exposure to interdisciplinary applications of data science. Their work highlights the importance of early research engagement and reflects the D3M Lab\u2019s commitment to mentoring students at all levels and broadening participation in data-driven research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
