We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Sayed Reza, Assistant Professor of Computer Science has been awarded the Excellence in Interdisciplinary Research (EIR) Seed Funding from Penn State’s Office of the Vice President for Commonwealth Campuses (OVPCC).
Project Title: Automated 2D/3D Segmentation of Zebrafish for Integrative Atlas Using Deep Learning Models
This project leverages deep learning to automate zebrafish image segmentation, contributing to an integrative atlas that supports research in developmental biology and precision medicine. The grant will foster interdisciplinary collaboration and lay the foundation for future large-scale proposals.

What Students Should Know to Contribute
Students interested in working on this project should have:
- Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with libraries like TensorFlow or PyTorch.
- Understanding of computer vision techniques, especially image segmentation and convolutional neural networks (CNNs).
- Basic knowledge of biological imaging and willingness to learn domain-specific concepts.
- Experience with data preprocessing, model training, and evaluation for 2D and 3D datasets.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in applying machine learning to real-world biological problems and contribute to cutting-edge research.
